Export recognition opens doors for Brandon Medical

Tell us a little about your business.

Owned by the Hall family since 1993, Brandon Medical re-established itself as a renowned and multi-award-winning medical technology company. In recent years, Brandon has doubled its workforce and relocated to a modern, state-of-the-art 23,000sqft unit based in rising tech hub Leeds. After continued success in the domestic market, Brandon has spent the last decade building an extensive distributor network in export markets, with export now becoming the Company’s main focus.

Explain the impact that international trade has had on your business. 

In the past year in Malaysia sales amounted to more than £214,000, an increase on the previous year’s sales of £95,000.

In other APAC high growth markets such as Pakistan, sales have increased dramatically in just one year, rising from £40,000 to over £535,000. In Thailand, sales in the last financial year were almost double that of the previous year. Sales in India have gone from nothing to over £22,000 in just three months.

Having already entered 15 of the 20 major APAC markets, the business is in the process of penetrating two further APAC markets, and has plans in place to enter the remaining three APAC markets. In 2017, Brandon has a 25% growth forecast in the APAC region but we are like to exceed this.

What difference does exporting make to your business?

Brandon’s export strategy is to move away from being a solely UK-based company towards having local representation in export markets and the Company has focused its efforts on the Asia Pacific region, with new appointments now based in the area. Since implementing this strategy, the Company has overall seen a 37% increase in export sales in the last year.

Brandon has successfully penetrated 15 of the major 20 APAC markets. In the last year, Brandon has secured a local presence in the region, setting up a subsidiary company in Malaysia which has become Brandon’s new APAC regional headquarters. In new markets specifically, Brandon has recorded significant growth in export sales of approximately 80% in the last year.

In the last 12 months, Brandon’s sales growth in export markets has increased, most notably in Indonesia, with sales amounting to more than £625,000 in this market. In the previous year, sales in Indonesia were just over £27,000.

How has the last year been for you?

We’ve increased export sales by 40% and overall sales for this year are up £31% on last year.

What has happened to you since you got involved in the Export awards?

We’ve been appointed as Commonwealth Export Champions which has help us to open up new markets in Africa, Zambia and Uganda in particular where have won major new hospital contracts worth over £1m.

What did it mean to you to be recognised in the Northern Powerhouse export awards?

Recognition as an award-winning exporter has opened doors to new markets and to influential contacts.  These include new international hospital builders and access to Governments.

What advice would you give to firms considering getting involved in international trade?

Just do it!
