James McIlroy is Scotland’s emerging entrepreneur

James was one of seven winners of emerging entrepreneur awards for the UK, announced at last night’s award show in Newcastle’s Boiler Shop.

While studying medicine, James had the idea that it could be beneficial to transfer bacteria from one person's gut into the gut of someone else that was suffering from a disease associated with imbalances of bacteria.

Since then, James has raised £500,000 in an oversubscribed seed round of investment, and the Enterobiotix team has expanded to seven. He is on track to treat a first patient before he graduates as a doctor in May 2018.

Hosted by BQ and powered by Atom Bank, the awards bring together entrepreneurs from across the UK with the challenge of identifying individuals who, in their view, are a next generation entrepreneur.

The Scottish award was supported by Scottish Institute for Enterprise. CEO Fiona Godsman said: "Scotland's historic contribution to innovation both in the UK and the wider world is widely known. We're very proud of the next generation of Scottish innovators at SIE and we're very pleased to help showcase some of our brightest new talent on the national stage.

“The Scottish winner, James McIlroy, is an excellent example of someone using entrepreneurship to solve a real problem. He's made great strides with EnteroBiotix which has already gained significant traction and investment."

BQ Emerging Entepreneur of the Year Award for Yorkshire went to Benjamin Lawton of Custom Controllers.

In the North East & Cumbria, the award was won by Andy Haddon of Earth Doctors Ltd.

The winner of the BQ Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the North West was Kate Badger of the Academy of Fun!

In the Midlands, the award was scooped by Melissa Snover of the Magic Candy Factory.

The Welsh Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year is Sue Poole of C4EE, the Centre for Entrepreneurial Education.

Leila Francis Coleman of AquaPhysical is the winner of the BQ Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year Award for London & the South.
